Your Guide to Stress-Free Packing for Pilgrimage

Ah, the thrill of going on pilgrimage! One thing that can quickly become a stress point is packing for your upcoming travels and making sure you are traveling lightly but extensively. But not to worry - with a bit of planning and some handy tips, you'll be a packing pro in no time.

Check the Weather and Plan Your Outfits

Before you start throwing things into your suitcase, take a moment to check the weather at your destination. This will help you pack appropriate clothing and avoid any surprises. Think versatility when choosing your outfits—pick items that can mix and match effortlessly, like a pair of jeans that go with several tops. It is also here where layers are helpful. If it is cold at night but warm during the day, pack a sweater or two to pull over for those circumstances, as opposed to bringing both winter and summer clothes.

Organize Efficiently

Once you've chosen your outfits, it's time to pack. There are a couple of popular methods: packing cubes or strategic folding. Packing cubes help keep things organized and compress clothes to save space. If you're using a hard-shell suitcase, a neat trick is to pack clothes on the side with the handle to maximize space on the other side once the suitcase is closed. Our team recommends packing outfits together, such as using a packing cube or gallon ziploc to help your bag stay neat and organized.

Another  idea to consider is leaving a section of your suitcase empty for souvenirs. This will help you ensure you have room to pack your new purchases! A strategy to use can be packing an empty shoebox that can be easily disposed of while you’re traveling.

Toiletries: Less is More

Ah, toiletries—the never-ending challenge. It's easy to overpack here. Stick to travel-sized versions as much as possible to save on weight and space. Ladies, it can feel tricky—finding the balance between essentials and extras can be tricky. Remember, prioritize daily essentials and avoid packing items you won't use regularly. Also, don’t stress about accidentally forgetting something at home! Most locations we will travel to have a convenience store nearby; it will not be challenging to find a replacement for your time on pilgrimage.

#4 Tips for Toiletries Packing

Tips for Toiletry Packing

When it comes to liquids like shampoo and conditioner, opt for travel-sized bottles or samples. They're designed to withstand travel rigors better than makeshift containers and reduce the risk of spills. For other toiletries, consider multi-functional options like a razor with built-in shave gel or concentrated mouthwash to save on bulk. (One of our favorite items are these innovative containers by Cadence. They make toiletry packing a breeze!)

#5 Medications: Handle with Care

Medications: Handle with Care

Never pack essential medications in your checked luggage. Keep them with you in your carry-on along with copies of your prescriptions. Utilize pill organizers to save space and ensure you have enough for your trip. For liquid medications, stick to their original containers or ask your pharmacist for travel-friendly packaging.

Shoes: Keep It Practical

Shoes are crucial but can weigh down your bag. Pack versatile pairs like comfortable walking shoes, dressy flats, or slip-ons depending on your itinerary. Minimize your packing to two pairs of shoes if possible—one for daily exploring and one for evenings out. Don’t stress too much about having stylish shoes in every picture. You can easily crop it out and you’ll be far more thankful you are comfortable (as we will be walking multiple miles) on pilgrimage than stylish.

#7

Luggage Requirements

When choosing what size of luggage to bring, you should choose one that isn’t larger than a 28 inch, and one small carry-on. We recommend that your carry-on be small enough to fit under a seat, not larger than 16 inch tall. This is smaller than what an airline suggests, but if you will be traveling via motorcoach at or European train at times, it is much easier if your carry-on can fit in these spaces. Also be sure to check that you can comfortably lift your carry-on above your head. If not, it is too heavy for pilgrimage.

Extra Outfit(s)

Traveling has changed quite a bit since the COVID-19 pandemic, and one issue that has increased in frequency is lost baggage. Too many times we have pilgrims who have lost baggage (due to no fault of their own) and can understandably turn your peaceful pilgrimage into a stressful moment. This is why you are highly encouraged to pack an extra outfit or two with undergarments in your carry-on in case this happens to you. (Pro tip: This is a great reason to purchase travel insurance as you will be reimbursed for expenses if your luggage is lost or stolen.)

Stored Items are Safe Items!

When traveling, it’s important to keep valuable things tightly packed up and secure. Keep valuables, like wedding rings, at home. You can purchase travel safe silicone ring bands (ENSO is a great brand to try) or fun cheap jewelry so you don't have to worry about lost items while away. It’s also a good idea to think about ordering RFID lined containers to protect items like your passport and cards from being scanned. And lastly, consider carabiners to lock zippers together or to store things like germ-x and chapstick outside your pack and ready to go! Money belts are another great travel item to keep valuables on your person and safe.

Final Thoughts

Packing doesn't have to be a chore—it's a chance to plan and organize for a great adventure! Remember, the key is to pack smartly and lightly, leaving room for souvenirs and memories. Bon voyage!
